Just because you stick a birdcage veil and Betty Page makeup on a Woman, her strapless dress is still not 1940s style. Women never married in strapless dresses until the later part of the century, and not regularly until the 1990s. Weddings happened in a church (for the most part, I am being exceptional western and christian-centric here)and you didn't wear something that BARE in a church.

This goes for other eras as well. I have seen lots of misidentified vintage dresses, lots of postmodern mixing of retro styles from the 40s, 50s, and 60s (or the 20s, 30s, and 40s or the 20s, 50s, and 70s!) all lumped together and identified as one decade. Not that there is anything wrong with taking the various retro elements that you like and using them all, that is post modernism in fashion after all, but the incorrect identification drive me nuts!
